Features of Sri Lanka National Flag and their meaning

The four Bo leaves at the four corners of the flag;
Compassion, kindness, joy in others prosperity and equanimity, which are the highest standards of harmonious living.

The lion holding a sword upright by its right paw;
Justice, righteousness, heroism, strength and the discipline of the nation

Lion’s eye;
Vigilance on the rulers’ performance

Lion’s tongue;
Rulers’ statements should be honest and truthful

Lion’s head and tail;
Equality between ruler and citizens

Lion’s hairy body;
Strength

Sword;
Indication that the country should be ruled righteously, meting out justice to all

Lion in yellow;
Righteousness and peaceful way of life

Crimson background;
Immortality and the defeating of the evil forces of oppression

Yellow border round the flag and the maroon background;
Represents the Sinhalese community

Two vertical stripes of saffron and green of equal size;
Tamil and Muslim communities respectively
